Trump Media Abruptly Unwinds Crypto.com Partnership and Scraps CRO Treasury Plans

In a surprising reversal of its aggressive push into the digital asset space, Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG)—the parent company of Truth Social—has abruptly terminated its high-profile partnership with Crypto.com. The unwinding of these deals signals a significant strategic pivot for the media company under its new interim leadership.

According to a recent 8-K filing and exclusive reporting from Axios on August 7, TMTG, Crypto.com, and Yorkville Acquisition Corp. have mutually agreed to terminate their plans to launch the “Trump Media Group CRO Strategy.” This ambitious venture, announced during the crypto treasury boom of 2025, was designed to create a publicly traded company built around Crypto.com’s Cronos blockchain and its native CRO token. The goal was to build a massive digital asset treasury and generate returns through staking and yield farming.

The termination of the $6.4 billion CRO treasury deal was attributed to “prevailing market conditions and shifting business and stakeholder priorities.” Interim CEO Kevin McGurn noted that the market for digital asset treasury companies has become heavily saturated, making the venture less attractive than when it was initially conceived. Furthermore, the strategic importance of staking those specific assets has diminished for Crypto.com.

The fallout from the announcement was immediate, with the price of the CRO token dropping approximately 8% following the news. It is worth noting that TMTG had already committed roughly $105 million to CRO purchases in September 2025 as part of the initial partnership agreement.

Beyond the treasury venture, TMTG and Crypto.com are also scaling back their plans to deeply integrate prediction markets directly into the Truth Social platform. Instead of building the complex back-end infrastructure required to operate these markets natively, the companies will pivot to a simpler marketing arrangement. TMTG will leverage its audience to promote Crypto.com’s existing prediction-market products to Truth Social users.

This strategic retreat highlights a broader maturation within TMTG. Under previous leadership, the company eagerly attached its brand to various crypto initiatives. Now, McGurn is focusing the company on its core competencies: media distribution and data monetization. TMTG is increasingly looking to license its platform data—via its newly launched API business—to high-frequency trading firms and large language model developers, rather than attempting to build every financial product in-house.

The unwinding of the Crypto.com deals also comes as TMTG focuses its resources on closing its pending merger with fusion energy company TAE before the end of the year. While the Trump brand remains closely associated with the broader cryptocurrency narrative, the operational reality at TMTG is clearly shifting away from direct protocol integration and toward traditional media monetization strategies.
